The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
