In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Government Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
