The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
