As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the spirits of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often small games, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
