They're Doing to America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and distinctive instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor most senseless, but potentially its most enlightening – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.

He has committed acts countless times more severe – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to foreign assistance is 600,000 and growing, and this week an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have conceived – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with the government.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the world' into 'the meek shall die to cholera'

As disorienting as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the established notion about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.

We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of love into a figure of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for many of us.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, as conceptually the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and because the quickly increasing segment within America might have little sense about him as they consider themselves atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of great price in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably not the story of an authoritative monarch arising; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to avoid secret police. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for other people, particularly for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, shown by providing food and sheltering. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a way to educate the aggressor; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your jacket you must offer him your sweater also.

The evident and direct reality that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of radical love focused on the impoverished is what has always made Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. In the 1950s it was contained by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.

A Conflict for the Finest Within Us

So I have been inspired to observe the determined opposition regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to assist in constructing the initiative that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in significant amounts in interim political contests. We will need to maintain it, and with identical determination, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities in US history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you welcome them and embrace them or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended through connection to elements that cause it to be unique and beautiful, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it mean feigning the most negative about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it means both modesty and belief, a blend that serious US believers ought to accept.
